Good shading is vital to drawing realistically. In this class we'll use three types of shading: light, dark, blended. To focus on shading, we'll start by using a template to trace the shapes of the succulent plant or follow me to use a basic grid method to draw it into your sketchbook. By practicing the three types of shading in this class you'll get closer to achieving realism in your drawings!

In this lesson we use a subject of two apples to analyse how colour translates into value. Test your own perception of the value of colour with two simple exercises. Then, follow a traditional drawing process to complete a final drawing including proportion, shape, shadows and highlights. You'll learn: • ways to interpret colour as value • how to break a subject into light and dark • fundamental drawing skills

In this lesson, we explore the fundamentals of sketching. We'll practice key skills including: • using a simple grid • how to separate a subject into light and dark values • how to apply quick shading with hatching • how to bring edge quality into your sketch By the end of this lesson, you'll have a solid understanding of the key skills needed for sketching, and be ready to apply them to any subject you choose.

In this class we focus on layering shading to build up a realistic effect. This lesson is suitable for students who are comfortable with shading and want to improve their observation of subtle values. We'll practice: • finding shapes using angles and negative spaces • identifying shapes of shadow • building up values slowly with subtle detail

Shading a realistic effect takes time, there's just no getting around it. In this lesson we'll take the time to look at values and shade subtle variations and smooth transitions to achieve realistic looking folds of fabric. If you need to work on patience when drawing then this will be a good challenge for you! Best suited for improver level as it requires the ability to control pencil pressure to shade lightly.

In this intermediate level class we focus on improving observation by eye while using the envelope method. Once we've got the main proportions on the page we'll use contour drawing to add the complex pattern of laces. You'll learn: • how to use the envelope method • how to approach highly detailed subjects with patience • ways to add your own style as you finish the drawing Currently available to membership only.

In this class we focus on drawing ellipses with a sense of perspective. Using a subject that is full of ellipses, we'll work on understanding the size and angle of each ellipse before building shading to create realistic form and reflections. You'll learn: Perspective as it relates to ellipses and sketching Proportion techniques including negative space Effective shading techniques Suitable for intermediate level.
